The 2016-2017 academic year will be my seventh year at ASU Preparatory Academy Phoenix. This year, I'm looking forward to working with IGCSE Biology at ASU Prep.
I grew up on the west side of Phoenix, graduating from Moon Valley High School. In addition to developing a love for Science during high school, I enjoyed playing oboe in the concert band and alto saxophone in the marching band. I attended the University of Arizona, earning a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and Biochemistry. While at the U of A, I worked in a Department of Entomology lab where we studied insect biochemistry. We studied how insects metabolize (break down) chemicals in plants so those chemicals will not be toxic to them. The primary insect I worked with was Manduca sexta, the tobacco hornworm, which is able to digest both tomato and tobacco leaves, although these leaves contain chemicals that would be toxic to us. At the U of A, I also played oboe with the Wind Ensemble and Symphony Orchestra. One of my favorite events was playing with the pit orchestra for Gilbert and Sullivan's The Mikado.
After completing my degree at the U of A, I lived in Central Mexico for a number of years. I resided first in Cuernavaca, Morelos, The City of Eternal Spring, and later in Tlalpan, Mexico City, The Place of Solid Ground.
I look forward to another great year of student growth not only in understanding of Science, but also development as individuals.
